Charles’ Story

Charles was given his first opiate by his mom when he was a child, priming him for his lifelong struggle with addiction. But it was brief homelessness and a concerned community counselor that convinced Charles to first try The Salvation Army’s six-month residential ARC (Adult Rehabilitation Center) in San Bernardino, CA.

“I was spiritually sick, and I needed to find out how to change. I did the program, graduated, and then became ARC’s Assistant Residential Manager where I would help other struggling addicts. But by then my wife and kids had moved to Washington; my goal was to be with them.”

“This place gets you healthy — physically, mentally, and spiritually. I have replaced addiction with gratitude and faith.”

Determined, Charles soon landed a similar job with the Seattle ARC as the program’s Resident Manager. There, he forged trusting relationships with clients while supporting Seattle’s transition to today’s ARP (Adult Rehabilitation Program). However, longing to be reunited with his family in North Seattle, Charles left his live-in position with the Army and returned to general contracting.

Feeling new pressures, Charles quickly turned to alcohol and drugs. “It took a while, but my wife figured out I was using again. Our constant fighting led me to pack my truck and abruptly leave.”

Hopeless and alone, Charles was enticed by a stranger’s offering of fentanyl which resulted in a near-fatal overdose. His wife, terrified of losing him, showed unwavering commitment and compassion. As he lay in a hospital bed, she told him, “You can go to a 90-day program in Chehalis, or you can go to ARP. I already called Mitch at ARP.”

Filled with fear and shame, Charles was escorted to the Seattle ARP the next day, his wife by his side.

“I used to tell the guys you can’t save your face and save your hide at the same time. Once I had that thought, I immediately knew I had to go to ARP. I was so worried about saving face, but I really needed to save my own life.”

Charles is now a graduate of the program he so carefully created, putting others before himself.

“This place gets you healthy -- physically, mentally, and spiritually. I have replaced addiction with gratitude and faith, which dissolves fear. Faith didn’t make what I went through easy. It just made my recovery possible. It’s the people that care about you – the fellowship – that gives you enough hope to get through another day. I was 10 days into the program and the chapel was filled with graduates I had helped who were there now helping me. The graduates welcomed me with open arms – not judgment – and that gave me hope. Hope helps make you believe it’s possible to get through this. That is what I focused on most during my time at ARP.”

2023 King County Impact

With inflation skyrocketing and more people going hungry, The Salvation Army is receiving record numbers of requests for food and support for the most basic family needs. Our food pantries are struggling to keep up with the burgeoning demand for help as thousands appear at our doorsteps throughout our communities, many people now seeking assistance for the first time in their lives. More and more children are appearing – alone – as families shatter under the financial burden of trying to feed them. The Salvation Army focuses on each person and each family’s unique barriers to address the roots of their challenges. It is our mission to stand by those who turn to us for help during each phase of their personal journey, walking alongside them toward a better life.

William Booth Society

The Salvation Army was founded in 1865 when William Booth decided to take his ministry into the streets of London where it would reach the poor, the homeless, the hungry, and the destitute. Today, his mission continues throughout the world. In King County, we are honored by the generous support of select donors who give substantial gifts annually – to support The Salvation Army and our life-changing work in the community.

Helen has unwaveringly dedicated the past 33 years of her life volunteering as a national CASA – Court Appointed Special Advocate – passionately advocating for children and youth who have experienced abuse or neglect.

In her quest to protect children and make life-changing differences in their lives, Helen has come to know the impact of The Salvation Army through the families she has helped. Many have been Salvation Army clients, often graduates of an Army recovery program.

“My husband passed away 10 years ago, and I’ve spent a bit of time researching organizations to support. I fortunately have resources to give away. I have known about The Salvation Army my whole life. There’s nothing that The Salvation Army does that I know of or have heard first-hand that I don’t personally support or believe in. The work The Salvation Army does is important and good – it saves lives – and that’s why I choose to support them. I think how The Salvation Army deals with disaster relief is wonderful and I often give extra during those times as well.”

Chika’s Story

After 20 years apart, Chika -- along with her four children -- traveled from Germany to Renton, WA to reconnect with her estranged brother. Quickly realizing he needed her support long-term, their reunion turned into a relocation.

Overcrowded, living in her brother’s tiny apartment, Chika called 211, The United Way’s global helpline hoping to receive essential community service support. Seeing The Salvation Army listed among local agencies able to assist, she knew it meant church and ministry. “I was convinced the Army would have the heart of God in their soul, able to help.”

“ Tears began streaming down my face as I observed others seeking the same life-saving assistance.”

Chika first visited the Renton food pantry in October 2022. She recounts, “Tears began streaming down my face as I observed others seeking the same life-saving assistance. I was feeling utterly broken. Angie, my Pathway of Hope case manager, saw me through a camera in her office and introduced herself. Holding my hands while I was crying, she asked how she could help. Angie was like an angel coming to my rescue. She then invited me into her office. She gave me food for my family. From that day until now The Salvation Army has been awesome.”

Angie asked Chika what she wanted for her future; she emotionally shared that she hoped to become a board-licensed Registered Nurse here in Washington, as she had been in Nigeria and Germany. Making no promises, Angie said she would see if the Army could help. “I gave Angie the name of the place I wanted to go for the review course; The Salvation Army paid it all – almost $600.”

After months of studying, support from Angie and her course instructor, and trust in the Lord, Chika passed the board licensing exam. Before the test Chika conveyed, “I hope God grants me favor. I am dreaming of a better future for myself and my four children. I remember that first day visiting the Renton food pantry. I am not a person that cries. I only cry when I am worshipping God or am praying. I wondered why God wanted me to go through this process, through this phase of life that I had never seen. Maybe God wanted me to teach people in the future? I look forward to that day, to sharing my experience with others. I want to bring others to The Salvation Army for help.”

With ongoing gratitude to her case manager Angie, God, and The Salvation Army, Chika feels blessed the Army provided first month’s rent for the family apartment and is unwaveringly hopeful about the future while continuing to visit the Renton food pantry, weekly.

“I am dreaming of a better for myself and my four – Chika

DALE H. BURGESON

*deceased

Dale protected and cherished the people of Grandview, WA for over 50 years. While an Eastern Washington resident, he prospered in insurance sales and led the city as its Mayor, all while embracing volunteer board positions with the local Salvation Army. Passionate about the Army’s life-saving community impact for decades, Dale proudly transitioned to a staff role when called upon, especially one focused on relationship building.

“I advocated for and supported The Salvation Army’s mission to serve others and love God for many years before I was inspired to work for the Army.”

Following the loss of his wife, Dale returned to his hometown of Bellevue to be closer to his children and their families.

“Since retirement, I’ve set up my own gift annuity to the Army and the Eastside Corps. I did this not just because of the incredible income tax benefits. Most importantly, I wanted to support and perpetuate the mission of The Salvation Army – protecting the youth, feeding the homeless, and saving people’s lives. When you make a planned gift you realize your gift today – not tomorrow, after you are gone.”
