Day in and day out, The Salvation Army Northwest Division is working hard to help neighbors become, and stay, housed. We focus on each person’s and family’s individualized barriers to address the roots of their struggles. It is our mission to stand by their side at each phase along their journey. Here are just a few examples of the services provided:
Love Beyond LOSS
Last June, mom Stephanie and her two sons fled their apartment escaping an adjacent fire. Watching their building burn, she called 911 from the curb, terrified their home would be uninhabitable.
By divine grace, The Salvation Army of Anacortes was a stone’s throw from the blazing apartment. In minutes, the officers and staff were by Stephanie’s side providing comfort, housing needs, and spiritual support to her and the kids. (They were already familiar with Army staff from receiving weekly food boxes and participating in Angel Tree Christmas activities.)

Although the apartment remained standing, smoke damage left most contents unsalvageable. The Army immediately came to the family’s rescue providing an air purifier, bedding, sheets, blankets, towels, and more, so they could remain housed.

The officers then offered Stephanie’s older son a scholarship to attend a week of overnight camp at Camp Arnold. He loved all of it – swimming, archery, prayer, making friends, community, the food, kayaking, bracelet making, receiving The Good Samaritan Bead, and more. So much so he attended a second session just weeks later. Through fellowship and Camp Arnold friendships, Stephanie and the boys now attend church weekly.
“I have found community at The Salvation Army church because of Camp Arnold. I cry at church all the time. They mean so much to us. Had it not been for the officers, would not have decided to go back to church. After meeting
Lieutenants Brett and LaShan at the fire, and my son loving Camp Arnold, we decided to go back to church. My son has always been a believer. He wants to pray and thanks God for everything. He is such a kind soul. We are so thankful. The Salvation Army really feels like family.”
Though their housing struggles continue, Stephanie remains hopeful. Only two quarters away from finishing college, Stephanie strives to complete her education and secure a job so she can support her family independently in a comfortable way.
“I want to teach my children what’s important and give them the experience I know they deserve. want to know that I have healthy, God-loving children and they will go to the right place at the end of this. I want to focus on my relationships with my children and with God and want them to be as strong as they can be. The Salvation Army is family to us. It is so nice to feel that other people in our community care about us. I want to give hope to people who feel broken and hopeless. You can rebuild yourself.”
