This year, Salvation Army Bell Ringers started ringing on Halloween.

Captain Tim Danielson said the early start is necessary.

"Some of our corporate partners are allowing us to come out a little early, and start ringing a little early, which is helping us make up ground for how many folks are not signing up to ring because of their concerns with COVID, and not only that. The shortage in change... we're not going to see the same amount of change floating around because of those types of things," he said.

The Redding Salvation Army's Red Kettle goal is $130,000. Captain Tim hopes technology will help fill the gap. Volunteers are handing out QR codes that redirect people to a website where they can donate virtually.

Safety precautions are being taken for Bell Ringers and those who donate.

Captain Tim said the Kettles are wiped down when they are taken in or out. Volunteers also use hand sanitizer, wear masks, and stay 6 feet away from others.

Anyone who wants to volunteer as a Bell Ringer can call (530) 222-2207.
